WSU Out-of-State Grant

The WSU Out-of-State Grant assists incoming first-year undergraduates who are paying nonresident tuition & fees. This award is offered to eligible first-year undergraduates who are admitted and begin attending full-time in the fall 2024 semester.

Grant for incoming first-year undergraduates - fall 2025

  • The WSU Out-of-State Grant can cover as much as $4,000 for up to four consecutive years, beginning the semester of admission.
    • Students with an SAI below 17,500 will receive up to $2,000.
    • Federal Pell grant recipients will receive an additional amount, up to $4,000 total.

Grant requirements

  • All incoming first-year undergraduates who file the 2025-26 FAFSA by the deadline will automatically be considered for this award.
  • This grant is disbursed only to students who attend full-time (12 or more credit hours); are working on their first undergraduate degree; and are charged the nonresident tuition and fee rates. Students with tuition waivers are not eligible for this grant.
  • This is a need-based award that may be reduced or canceled if you are receiving other grants and scholarship awards.
  • WSU must receive your 2025-26 FAFSA by April 1, 2025.

To retain the award

  • Meet all Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements.
  • File your FAFSA each year, continuing to demonstrate need eligibility.
  • It is expected that you maintain full-time enrollment (12 or more credit hours each semester) during the fall and winter semesters and pass at least 30 credits each academic year.

Wayne State Promise Grant

New student awards will not be offered after the 2022-23 academic year.

Current award recipients must

  • Meet all Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements
  • Maintain full-time enrollment (12 or more credit hours each semester) during the fall and winter semesters
  • Complete at least 24 credits per academic year
  • If you earn a bachelor's degree in less than four years, the award will terminate at that time.
  • Students must file the FAFSA each year, continuing to demonstrate need with an EFC between 5001-9000.
  • Students admitted before Fall 2017 must file the FAFSA each year, continuing to demonstrate need with an EFC between 0-8000.
